Modular Building (Education Facility)

Blackburn College is one of the largest Colleges in the UK and offers a range of adult courses for the people of Blackburn and the surrounding area. After revealing a multi-million-pound Victoria Building redevelopment, the college needed a temporary solution to continue to provide exceptional, high quality learning environments for their students.

Following a successful tender, Pickerings designed a double storey education facility featuring multiple classrooms, toilets, and a staff room. Shortly before construction commenced the building design required amending due to the college unearthing an access point to underground services. The finished building from our Principal range offered a flexible design which still met the client’s needs. Our compliant building included 12 separate classrooms with DfE specification teaching walls, bank of unisex WC’s, disabled WC, staffroom, and server room.

Due to limited space and a tight programme to adhere to, working around term times, preparation was key to getting the project delivered safely and on time. This meant building on and off site. We built a bespoke staff room and toilets on site in our own compound area to reduce impact on the students and members of the public around the site. We worked with the client to design open plan toilets to limit anti-social behaviour and to meet modern guidelines. To help maximise the productivity of the students we installed fresh air ventilation.

Even with a campus of over 8000 students and members of the public, there were no recorded lost hours during building production. Install and fit out and all deliveries were pre-arranged, timed and managed with no issues via a public carpark and through the campus.

Our frame panel modular system means that our buildings are naturally sustainable, have PIR LED lighting as standard and on average over 95% of all the materials (including second fix) would be reused on the next project.
