Health Modular Building, Ely

St Mary’s Surgery provides comprehensive NHS healthcare to the people of Ely & local villages in Cambridgeshire. With over 16,000 patients and a growing local population redevelopment of the surgery was needed to meet the increasing demand for healthcare services. During the 12 months period of building work the surgery was to relocate to a nearby hospital but because of insufficient facilities at the hospital a temporary building was needed.

Following extensive research the management of the surgery contacted Pickerings and a healthcare specialist visited to provide advice on the best solution. A building was designed to meet the requirements of the surgery. Subsequently, Pickerings was awarded the contract to provide temporary facilities to ensure business continuity.

Whilst preparation of the building modules got underway Pickerings completed the groundworks and building foundations on a greenfield area of the hospital site. Following safe delivery and installation of 16 modules the temporary modular building was handed over to the surgery within weeks. The finished single-storey building of around 48 metres x 9 metres comprises of a reception; large waiting room; 14 consulting rooms; lockable storage rooms; large open plan staff area; toilets for staff and patients. Externally, ramps, steps and handrails were supplied and installed for easy access.

Additional products and services from the Pickerings+ range were provided including intruder alarm; fire alarm; air conditioning; emergency lighting and data cabling. Although there was some minor temporary disruption as the surgery moved sites there was no impact to the level of healthcare provision delivered to patients.

The temporary Principal modular building was quickly put into use and both the staff and patients have been very impressed with the overall quality of their temporary surgery.
